Musikgarten

We started Maggie in a music class, called Musikgarten, this year and she's had so much fun. During class we often dance with our scarves and Maggie just loves to play peek-a-boo with anyone. After the class the children are allowed to play outside in the hallway on a ladder, steps and a crawl box. There are a few pictures set to one of the songs we listen to during the beginning of class.

Dancing Play Dates & Standing Tall

Maggie's 10 months old and a few days. We had a very busy play date schedule today and left the house at 9:30 AM and didn't get back until after 7:00 tonight. Beat down. Whole Foods for cookies and cake flower, Ethan's, Knox/Henderson, McKinney, Babies 'R Us, Kate & Jake's, and finally pick up Jeff for dinner at the fabulous new Taj Mahal restaurant in downtown Dallas. Maggie had her first Indian food tonight and really liked it. She loved the seasoned rice and also enjoyed some chicken and sauce.

She's been dancing like crazy at her activity table, but I never can catch it on camera. But today at Ethan's she gave us a quick look. See video. She also stood up on her own for the first time. I'm convinced she does this while alone in her crib, but maybe I really am lucky enough to see this for the first time. She had a great time playing at both friends' homes and I enjoyed catching up with the moms.

I know she'll sleep well tonight! For now, I'm off to research cake recipes as I endeavor to make her birthday cake extra special in December. And...I have a husband who loves sweets and wouldn't mind being my test rat in the meantime.

Special Mail Delivery

Maggie is 9 months old and is trying out her new toy. It's a little pushcart for delivering the mail. She really likes it! Someone in the neighborhood gave it to us. So it's been wiped down and made part of our home. She also got a little pop-up toy for $2. It has numbers on top of the popups and a different animal under each number. The squeaker toys remain a big draw for the dogs. In fact, all of Maggie's toys are a hit with the dogs.

Reading Books

Maggie had her 9 month checkup on Monday and after a great nap she decided it was a perfect time to take out all of her books. She loves to empty her bin of board books and casts them aside with emphasis. The dogs have learned to keep clear! But when it comes to the paper books, she's very gentle and I wanted to capture this fun time. At this appointment she weighed in at 17 lbs. 5.5 oz. (50%), grew to 27.5" (50%) and has a head circumference of 17-3/16" (40%). She also had her flu shot along with both of us.

This weekend Maggie and I were in Colorado visiting Lisa, Mark, Markie, Jack & Kate. Kate turned 1 on Friday, September 11th and we had a fun special day for her that ended with pizza at Woody's in Golden and some delicious ice cream from a local shop. On Sunday, Kate had wonderful birthday party for all of her local cousins and neighbors. What a lucky girl! Maggie had a great time playing with her cousins and enjoying climbing up Lisa's carpeted stairs, over and over again.

To add to her dining repertoire, she had turkey, Cherios, whole wheat bread, and a little bit of pizza crust. Sleeping during the visit was not her strong-suit, but as soon as we were back home, Maggie is sleeping much better. Our pediatrician is gently reminding me not to feed her during the night. So on Monday night we soothed her in her crib when she woke at 1:30, but I fed her at 4:15 as it was 12 hours from her last feeding. Last night she went to bed at 8 and didn't get up until 4:30. The progress is great, but I must admit I woke up at 3:45 and was awake until 5:15. Thank you doggies. :) Enjoy the video!

Playing Piano in Redding

We arrived in Redding on Tuesday morning and we're enjoying all of the fun toys that Grammy keeps for all of the children. We got out this piano toy for Maggie to play with today and she just loves it! She's 7 - 1/2 months old. More later...

Crawling

Last night while we were Skyping with my mom, Maggie crawled across her crib. We looked for a repeat today and she was ready to go on camera. We're not sure about all of her growling, but she loves to do this when she's playing with her toys or the flower on her excersaucer. She's 6-1/2 months old.

Acting very silly with her mom and dad

...yes, I feel silly posting this video of Jeff (and me) making baby noises for Mags, but she just enjoys this time so much that I couldn't resist! She's already started modifying her activity once the camera goes on. Must find way to turn off the tell-tale red light.

One Notch Down

Today we moved the little Peanut's mattress one notch down. She scoots to the sides of the crib, climbs the bumper, eventually peals it down and grabs the rungs of the crib to do a side crunch. She's very strong and although it's not likely, I was too worried that we were going to hear a thump in the night and find her on the floor.

Maggie is moving around like crazy. She scoots all around and generally moves backward to the upper right side of her crib where I usually find her, up on all fours, when she wakes up. Last night around 9 (way past her bedtime), she had her first deliberate crawl that I've seen where her knees and hands were coordinated. So exciting!!! I think she was awake from all of the excitement and trying to master her new skill. As of today, she didn't have much time on the floor to see if we can duplicate this or if it was a fluke. Although, this morning I had her on her blanket on the floor and she scooted backward almost under the bed while I watched her. She's quite a happy baby in general, but will definitely let you know if she's frustrated or stuck.

As for her dining fun, Maggie had apples for the first time today. I whipped up a batch last week and froze them alongside a batch of yams. With the apples (and pears) she makes a tart/sour face at first, but she gobbles them down. So far, she's had rice cereal, oatmeal, peas, sweet potatoes, pears, carrots, yams, bananas, and apple. And I'm pretty sure it was in that order. :)

I generally give her a fruit in the AM with oatmeal and a veggie at night with rice cereal. I'm anxious to have her try mangoes and avocado. I love the combination, but will serve them separately to her first. I also let her try out her hands with a sippy cup today and within 30 seconds of placing it in front of her, she'd grabbed both handles and took the mouth piece right to her kisser. We weren't really expecting her to drink anything, but we were more interested in getting her used to this as we're already in the 100's in Dallas and keeping hydrated beyond her milk supply might be challenging.

We had a play date today with Harper/Crystalyn and Sarah/Lana. It's so nice to gather with other moms and let the babies play, but she was exhausted tonight and went to bed at 6:15. Maybe this is a nap???

Yesterday was a little emotional as I packed up her next phase of clothes that she's outgrown. It's always fun to get her into the next biggest size, but it always means that this little girlie is getting so big. She totally done with any 3 - 6 month outfits and has some 6 - 9 that doesn't fit. It really depends on the brand. And the way the weather is heating up, we'll probably have her in the bare minimum to keep comfy in the house. I had the thermostat at 78 for a few days, but I couldn't take it. I'm a 75'er, otherwise none of us can sleep, even with the fans. Embracing the heat is fine during the day, but nighttime is a whole new game.

One last thing...these last 3 nights Maggie has been going to bed between 8 and 9 sleeping through until 4 or 5 respectively. This is so nice. My body will take a few days to adjust to this, as I'm still waking up to find her asleep, but this is going to be sooooo worth it! Yeah for sleep!

Rocking Around

Maggie is now 6 months old.  She had her well child checkup yesterday and she weighs 14 lbs. 14 oz and is "thriving" in Dr. Nale's own words.  She's 35% and has a good deal of chunk on her little legs and arms.  She's totally mastered rolling over and never sleeps on her back anymore.  We had a great trip to Minneapolis for Jeff's work a few weeks ago.  She slept through the night (9 PM - 5 AM) every night, but when we got back to Dallas, she reverted back to waking up once or twice during the night.  Go figure!

Her latest move is to rock back and forth on all fours (hands & knees).  She also likes to get up on her tip tops and her hands (downward facing dog) and squeals!  She loves her rice cereal and gets 1/4 - 1/3 cup twice per day and we are starting her on vegetables as well.  Yesterday she had peas for the first time and she really wasn't into them at all, but did continue to take bites.  More on that later.

5 months and a little bit of attitude

Maggie reached a new milestone today:  defiance.  All day today she was cantankerous and proud of it.  For the last two weeks, this little girl has LOVED her rice cereal, but today it took me three different attempts to get her to eat it.  Thanks to a week of antibiotics for her poor little UTI, she's learned to spit out medicine (and now rice cereal) and turn her head away to avoid my approaching syringe or spoon.  All the while, she is looking right into my eyes with a wry little smile.

Her other new trick is to make an L-shape with her body and her legs while on the changing table or in her crib.  (This position is not so new. See picture from mid-February.)  She then slams her legs down over and over again and can't help but smile and coo at her own latest amusement.  This is not so funny when I'm trying to administer meds to her diaper area (also thanks to the antibiotics her flora is imbalanced).  She seems to favor her left hand, although I know this can change over the next several months/years.  So while I am trying to calm her crazy legs, she figured out that she can take her left hand to touch her feet and then naturally decided to "help" me spread the diaper cream.  Eesh!  And all this bouncy leg movement seems to get things moving for her.  I went through 3 diapers in 5 minutes and countless wipes as I *attempted* to clean her hands of the diaper cream before she decided to put them anywhere else on her body.

Buddy and Sadie have really begun to enjoy the baby.  They know better than to play with her toys, but are really interested in Maggie.  On Saturday Maggie was giving Sadie some pets on her face (and eyes, ears and nose) in a very gentle and sweet manner.  I couldn't believe she was so deliberate.  And then...she grabbed Sadie's neck.  We're lucky Sadie's been around kids forever and were thankful that she just sat there patiently while we gave Mags the old "no."  And Buddy who is normally wild is really mellow around the baby and even put his nose and front paws on the bed the other day before jumping up to see where Maggie was sitting.  After he jumped up on the bed, I gave him a few snaps to get on the other side of me.  Wonder of wonders, he jumped off the bed and walked around to the other side, jumped up and settled down.  For those of you that haven't witnessed the "storm before the calm," this is excellent behavior for BudBud.  One day, we'll get that on camera.  I should also note that my family, specifically my sisters and my mom are very nervous about the dogs getting close to the baby.  I hope that by writing about this now, I ward off any ill-fated dog-baby stories.

Finally, Maggie and I were on the 5 o'clock and the 6 o'clock news tonight on NBC.  We were interviewed about the unsolicited newspaper subscriptions that our neighborhood receives from a local Spanish publisher.  It's a total waste of paper, printing supplies and marketing $$$.  Even if they're recycled, it's superfluous from the get go.  While we are home, she is very vocal and emotive.  When we are out to eat, grocery shopping or trolling the mall, she is very quiet and enjoys looking around.  At this point, I'll count my blessings.

Easter Bunny

Thanks for the Easter Bunny for Maggie!  She loves it!  See you in a week or so.

She had her 4 month checkup today and is now 12lbs. 9oz.

Just 2 days to go! I posted some photos here because I cannot post to Kodak from my work computer (and I can't use our home computer at present). We took these on Sunday night and hope you enjoy! Still feeling great and enjoying the last days of the pregs.
I go in tomorrow for my 40 week checkup and the doctor will tell me when we'll induce if I've not gone into labor already. Getting the house ready for the baby and for Christmas has been so much fun. We bought our tree this weekend and are planning to finish all of the holiday decorating ASAP!

Week 32, 4 days

I had my 32 week checkup today, a few days early. The baby wasn't moving around like normal, so I called the doctor for some reassurance yesterday and did my kick counts. She asked that I confirm that I had 15 kicks in 30 minutes. The kicks were so much softer yesterday, but I could feel them. But again this morning, all of the movement was very subtle. I called again today and the nurse said the doctor was in surgery all day, but that they'd get me in for a biophyscial and a non-stress test.
When I went in at 2:00 PM today, they immediately did a sonogram and discovered that this little baby is breech! I think there is still ample time and hopefully enough room for the baby to turn, so not to worry.

We could see the baby's full belly (a good eater) and the baby's mouth opening and closing for breathing. Our little one is measuring 4lbs, 3oz and is in the 26th percentile for growth. I'm so happy I went in--I knew something was different, but I couldn't know what! After the sono, they hooked me up to a heart rate monitor with the clicker. Jeff so sweetly held the monitor in place as the little bugger kept moving around. I had to click the button each time I felt movement. Overall the babe scored a 10 out of 10 for the biophysical, but at least I know now what these new movements feel like. Even when they were doing the sono and we could see the baby moving its arms and legs, I couldn't feel anything. So, it must just be the baby's orientation.

On a side note, they still are showing my due date as 12/11. I like 12/10 better, since they told me that first... :)

98 Days to Go

I can't believe I'm under 100 days. With *only* 98 days to go, I suppose it's time to kick into gear on all the pending items. We're working a little bit at a time to get things ready, but this latest milestone will get things moving even faster.

I'm 26 weeks today and still feeling great. Jeff is in Kansas today and tomorrow. He's not been traveling as much, but does head to Madison this week. We also start our kitchen work next week on Monday. This will add a little extra stress, but as with the baby, the end result will be fabulous.

Facebook has captured some of my time last night. A friend of mine is now on there and it's fun to connect up with friends and family all in one place. I just can't commit to updates here or on my facebook page. I really need to post some photos. Maybe later.

August Update

This month, the baby had many in utero firsts, including the CU/CSU game watch party tonight. So many kicks! I'm sure the baby will be a fan. We also went for a long bike ride today on a paved trail and hung out by the pool. Everything is still moving along smoothly. I had my 24 week appointment this week (moved from last week) and the heart rate was at 156. I'm not sure if I believe that above 140 indicates a girl; everyone is telling me it's gotta be a boy with the way I'm carrying. Apparently, I don't look any different from the back, only the baby up front.

We were in CA for a quick weekend visit for Becky's birthday and to see Larry & Liann who were visiting from Washington. Such a great time! We swam more at my parents house that we have all summer. The weather was so nice and it was calming to be away from the busy pace of Dallas. Becky gave me a suitcase full of maternity clothes, which is so nice for the next few months.

The dogs are great. Last night we were visiting with Alan & Rita and their twin boys who will be 3 on October 10th. As the boys ran around on the hardwoods, Buddy was very barky. He'll have a lot to get used to with all of the baby noises. Sadie on the other hand is still pretty mellow. We bought them a new crate that has 2 doors. This will work perfectly for the new kitchen and laundry area where they'll have their own little carve out area that this crate will fit into just so.

The kitchen remodel begins on September 8th and should be finished by Thanksgiving. We're keeping our fingers crossed. For the baby, we're 101 days away from the due date. Lisa delivers on the 12th of September and Becky is due October 15th. Lots of timeline to track! Until next month!

Catching Up

Today is Jeff's birthday. He's so excited to be a dad. :)

Must be better about posting! I've just past the half-way mark last Wednesday and had my 20 week ultrasound. Everything is progressing just perfectly. I never experienced any morning sickness, trouble sleeping, heartburn, etc. Oh how nice this will be if this easiness continues! Up until last week, I had felt the tell tale flutters that our baby is moving around, but just at just about 20 weeks, I could feel more of a kick. I tried to get Jeff to feel it, but of course, the Bean wasn't up for performing. I suppose the defiance starts early!

We've mapped out the baby's room, but haven't really moved any heavy pieces around. We put the my desk/sewing table into the office with the other desk to make room for the crib. We also bought a glider for the nursery. I think I might like that more than the baby will like it!

It's so hot in Texas; we almost broke a record yesterday from 1924. We hit 105, but the record was 106. Today is also supposed to reach 105.

I've not really had any food aversions or cravings yet either. I'm not generally a sweets person, more savory, but I've been more open to little treats from time to time. And I really enjoyed having a virgin bloody Mary, but I've always liked tomato juice.

That's it for now. I'll commit to posting more regularly my thoughts and pics. Enjoy!

Day One

I found out today that I'm pregnant!!! We're just back from Tahoe to celebrate my 30th and our 7th anniversary--actually I came back on Tuesday, but Jeff doesn't come back until tomorrow. His work found out he was going to be in CA and found a "project" for him. I'm dying to tell him, but I must wait until tomorrow. This was our first month trying and we're a go! The nurses were just spinning with excitement when I went in for my annual exam this morning. I mentioned I was on day 29 since my last cycle and I'm rarely late--like the moon. They took a test and it immediately came back positive. My due date is December 10th. I'm so excited that all three sisters will be preggers: Lisa in Sept, Becky in Oct and me in Dec! I can't wait to share the news, if only that Jeffrey could make the plane get here sooner so I can share the news!

Taiwan Posts

When in Rome…
I should also add from my previous email that I had a dear friend of mine move to Japan for a year.  She has since moved back to Dallas, but had noted a certain “trash anxiety” that one might feel.  In Japan, and as far as I can tell in Taiwan, they are very diligent about recycling.  It is quite difficult to find a trash can and once you do, you are confronted with 3 – 5 different choices in which to place your trash.  (Scratch that!  Today (5/8) I saw a six-sort bin!)  When leaving the airplane I thought I’d be helpful by taking some of my trash with me that was not collected by the “friendly skies” staff and at once remembered my friend’s email about this dilemma.  For the 5 minute brisk walk from the gate to the customs counter, I finally found one trash cluster, into which I had to sort my trash.  Instinctually, I looked for security cameras!  I think I made the right choices, as no one came after me…yet!
Throughout or trip, I’ve had several meals with my boss, David.  Of course I noticed, but he actually commented on the fact that he is routinely served well before I am.  In some cases, I wait as long as 10 minutes before my dish comes to the table.  Ironically, in all cases, he has ordered something hot, while my dishes have all been cold.  This serving order also includes drinks.  It’s quite a difference from the southern hospitality I’ve grown accustomed to in Texas!  He also told me that an Asian co-worker that he has known for years explained to him that it is very normal for a woman to hold open the door for a man or allow them in/out of the elevator first.  Whew!  As they say, when in Rome…
In Taiwan, being seated, ordering, and dining takes as long as you’d like it to.  Sometimes it would be nice to accelerate the process, but it seems that it takes so long, even after we’ve asked for the bill.  On Thursday, we had all meals at the hotel.  The breakfast buffet was a combination of eastern and western cuisine, nothing much out of the ordinary.  We spent a few hours prepping for our meetings and went to grab a quick lunch at one of the 12 restaurants in the hotel.  We breezed into a French restaurant, which I’m now quite convinced had no French influence to speak of.  Let me describe our lunch to you!  David ordered a club sandwich, which came out as normal, but with a runny egg atop of all the other items inside the bread.  I ordered teriyaki chicken.  In hindsight, I should have noticed that it said, “with tortilla.”  I was expecting something more like a bento box with rice, teriyaki chicken, maybe some veggies, but what came out, was a teriyaki tortilla treat I simply could not stomach.  Imagine a very large tortilla, coated with refried beans, mayo, mustard, lettuce, cucumber, tomato and the most partsy chicken I’ve ever seen: yellow skin on, cold, tendon-y, with teriyaki sauce.  Enough said on that topic!
We met our car at 1:00 PM and were taken to the vendor site, about an hour away.  It was so nice to get out of the city.  You could really begin to see the green vegetation, the mountains and a good view of Taipei 101 (the world’s tallest building) in downtown Taipei.  Because the city rests in a valley, it experiences the same type of temperature inversion that you see in Denver, where the smog simply is trapped for days and days. Our meeting lasted until maybe 4:30, but with traffic it took us quite some time to get back home.  We were beat, and just wanted to get our dinner and turn in.   We tried a Chinese restaurant in the hotel, thinking we’d have better luck with local cuisine.  David had a hot pot with all varieties of fish that he enjoyed; I ordered vegetarian noodles (I bet you could have guessed that!).  My meal was much better than lunch and had a very nice broth with some unknown, clear vegetable about the size of a grape, with little flavor and the consistency of a boiled tomato.  The mushrooms inside the noodle broth were unlike anything I’ve ever tried:  tall spindly varieties and huge portabella-style mushroom that did not share the taste or consistency.  Our wait staff had some capacity for English, but pretty limited, so it was mostly pointing and subtle bowing.  I also began to notice that all of the women here were wearing nylons if they were in professional clothing.  And I mean nylons!  These were very thick flesh colored stockings like you would see on the ice skaters.  Only on the weekend did I see the younger women out in the city wearing bare legs.
When I got back to my hotel room, the space had been converted with more fresh flowers, my bed turned down and a gift from the hotel on my pillow.  It’s best described as a magnate in the form of a miniature Asian-style robe.  I’m convinced they have some sensor on the door that tells the staff when you leave because used towels—even hand towels—are almost immediately changed.  They have a token sign about conversation of water and saving energy, but each day they changed the towels and sheets.  There is a master switch as soon as you enter the hotel room that shuts off all power to the room.  I suppose that is some method of conservation.  End of Thursday.

I’ll try to keep this light and breezy, but you know that’s hard for me! I usually get down in the details, but bear with me. From leaving Jeff at DFW, I had ample time to putz around the D terminal board my plane in time. My seat was a window seat which would normally be great, but on a 13 hour flight, it could get a little tight. Next to me was a middle aged American man in a track suit who had already taken off his shoes before we took off. He was also showing signs of being a “talker” and was filling over into my seat/armrest. So as soon as we were in the air, I started to look around for a new seat and immediately in front of me, was an aisle seat with a younger Asian woman (petite I might add), so I sidled up next to her. I’m not sure if she was happy with that, but she seemed okay. The flight attendants were a mixed bag. It’s apparently a very senior route because they only have to work 3 days and then have 9 days off. So, most of the old bats were very abrupt. But there were a couple of man-tendants that were friendlier. Anyhow, there was one attendant that had on lime green running shoes and I commented that they must be comfortable. Boy, was that a good move…from there, he brought me chocolate covered blueberries, always made sure my water was full and he brought me treats back from business and first class that made my flight very enjoyable. I should also mention that our little TV’s were not working so well, so we couldn’t watch any movies for the first cycle. So I wanted to walk around a bit, but the old bat attendants made sure that people did not walk around for too long. It’s so crazy. So even if I wanted to talk with David (my boss and travel companion), I don’t think they liked that. I did get to watch the Holiday and a few episodes of CSI. I have a book on CD on my ipod too, so I had plenty to do and didn’t sleep very much on this flight. Then we had a very smooth landing into Tokyo in the rain. We waited at that airport, which was very clean and nice for our 3 hour layover and then we took our flight to Taipei.
On this leg, David sat next to me and after dinner, we both slept. That meal was a mixture of some Japanese food and some American food. Also, on this flight they offered drinks. I had a great little gin & tonic, but it really hit me quickly, making sleeping all the easier! From their, our entire group (there were other TI’ers on both flights) caught our bus. They had reserved a bus for us in advance for all of our meetings. The drive to the hotel truly was amazing. There is so much “easing” into lanes and more mopeds than I’ve ever seen with more people per bike than I’ve ever seen. I should also mention that all of the moped drivers have helmets and also wear designer surgical masks. And people with any sickness (cold, cough, SARs???) wear these masks as well. It’s the opposite of the Michael Jackson phenomenon where he was trying to keep germs out and these people are trying to keep germs in.
I don’t know how or if they pay attention to the signals, but every car, moped, bus or person seems to merge in and out of traffic with very little problem. And there are so few accidents. When I asked about it later, the response is that people don’t go fast enough here to get into an accident. In our van they gave each of us a hot towel and had bottled water waiting for us. The drive to the hotel was not very long. When we checked into the hotel there were messages waiting for each of us from the vendor for our pickup times and other meeting information. I took my shower and turned in for the night. Surprisingly, I’ve really not had any jetlag problems. I slept through the night.
In the morning, we all met for breakfast at 7:00. The breakfast buffet was on the top of the hotel with a great view of the city. The food was not as good as the view. Very very very strange foods available for breakfast. (Jeff, I know you wanted me to take pictures of the food, but it didn’t seem appropriate at that time). It was one of those buffets where you take a little bit of everything, but eat a little bit of nothing. The coffee was weak, so I’ve had tea only ever since and it’s been delicious. I generally don’t eat fish for breakfast and the continental fare was just not quite right. The eggs tasted differently, the cheese, etc. But I was a good sport and tried more than I thought I would. From there, we all took the shuttle over to the vendor site and we truly were treated like VIPs. It’s very interesting how rank plays such a significant role. We entered a conference room that looked more like a UN meeting room with interior tables and concentric tables around it. The most important person sits closest to the projector screen from each side of the company. So that the vendor had its entire people seated in ranking order on their side and we had all of our people seated on our side. David and I sat in the second circle, very near to the front. The women in the room do not have the same ranking as the men. It’s difficult to explain in an email, but they are more there to take care of all of the details of getting us coffee, cokes, snacks, but are also our business contacts on a daily basis. I’m still noticing a lot of that and don’t have a good description for their function. Maybe I will be the end of my trip.
The presentation of business cards is a ceremony in and of itself. Luckily I brought at ton of business cards. You must give and receive business cards with both hands, almost using only your finger tips. A slight bow is also exchanged, but you have to beware not to bow too low. We had a catered lunch that day with several choices and then in the afternoon we broke out into smaller groups. The new conference room we entered only had one table and I tried to sit near the back of the table (more because I wanted to be able to see everyone) and they immediately had me move to the 2nd seat position behind David near the front of the room. All of the vendors had portable phones with them (not cell phones) where they were taking calls during the meetings. They would cover their mouth and the phone and talk softly into the phone. This was not specific to just one person, it was kind of odd. (I also experienced this when we were on the trains--there are signs that you should either go to the galley or cover your mouth when talking.) We finished up our meetings and had pleasant negotiations. They called us a private car to take us to the train station. We took a bullet train from Kaohsiung (at the southern end of Taiwan) to Taipei (at the northern end of Taiwan). The train was just installed in January and has apparently made the trip much faster than flight or by car. The vendor ordered us Subway sandwiches before we left and had them delivered to us on the train. Although they were tasty, like I said earlier, they just weren’t the same as they would be at home. The Taiwanese people (vendor, hotel and transportation staff) really took great care of us. From the station in Taipei, we took a taxi to the hotel. When we tried to check in, they told me we couldn’t check in at the check-in desk and that we had to go to another location. I tried to be patient, but I didn’t really understand what was going on. The man came around the counter and walked us over to a special seating area where they apparently do VIP check-in. It was intended to be special treatment, but at that point, I think David and I were just ready to get to our rooms! When we got checked in, there was a letter addressed to us in our rooms welcoming us as “TI Executives”—I was happy to get a promotion. They listed all of the top people at TI and their contact information and specific networking instructions to get our computers up and running at the hotel. As I mentioned, we really have been well treated since we got here. The rooms are a little older, but are in great condition. Both hotel rooms have scales in them (fashion scales), which I had to chuckle over.
That’s it for my first 2 full days of travel. I’ll send more later, but I’ve got to get some rest. Tonight was a very busy night at snake alley…
